Many young men live in a state of massive despair because they have forgotten the hope of their future — their inheritance, their calling, and their horizon. Their selective or circumstantial near-sightedness enables a bleakness to seep into their hearts, casting a shadow that robs life of its fullness and its possibilities.

Despair, consciously or subconsciously, causes young men to either kill themselves slowly over the course of their lifetime or abruptly through impulsive risk-taking, violent encounters, or suicide.

The reason so many young men fall into despair is that they lack any expectation surrounding their future. Telos is a Greek word that can be translated as 'chief aim.' Whether we choose to accept it or not, our telos dictates the decisions we make in our lives. If young men base their 'chief aim' on unfounded hope or blind optimism, they will inevitably stand face to face with despair

During this 6-week intensive woodworking program, boys ages 9-15 will be trained to work with speed squares, measuring tapes, impact drills, and chop saws, but more importantly, they will explore six historical case studies of men who were confronted with varying degrees of despair and the pursuit of secure hope in their own lives.

The culminating project of this program will be custom Cornhole boards, serving as a tangible reminder to overcome despair by redirecting our 'chief aim' to a rock-solid hope.

We would be honored to have your son join us at“The Shop.”
